Shifting Sands, Rising Seas: Barges Beach (2008-2009)

The exhibit chronicled the changing faces of Cuttyhunk’s Barges Beach over the years. Nearly 75 years ago, through the inventive use of recycled wooden railroad barges or ‘car floats,’ the storm damaged beach was rebuilt. To repair the breach due to a November 1944 Nor’easter, 14 barges were run aground in 1949 and covered by 150 cubic yards of fill during the two year operation. Now after years of exposure, the barges are almost a memory, a casualty of the dynamic forces of erosion.
