Gosnold Island is often considered to be the location of the Gosnold's 1602 settlement.
The Gosnold Monument was erected in 1902-1903 by the Old Dartmouth Historical
Society to commemorate the tercentenary of the settlement.

Gosnold Island, which is less than one acre in size, sits in the West End Pond,
which is today a large brackish pond at the far western end of Cuttyhunk.
